In 2013, one of Wren’s earliest and most beloved designs was born: the Flying Fox. As part of a collaboration for an iPad sleeve collection, our founder Wendren Setzer teamed up with talented designers Daniel Ting Chong, Lauren Fowler, and Amy Lottering, who had previously worked with her on the first PPC cement bag. Each designer brought a unique perspective to the project, contributing to what would become one of Wren’s most iconic collections.
The Flying Fox, Amy Lottering’s bicycle design, and Daniel Ting Chong’s “Man on the Moon” were first introduced at Design Indaba in 2013. Wendren, deeply invested in the process, hand screen-printed the designs herself at her alma mater, CPUT. The attention to detail and personal involvement gave the project a special touch, making the Flying Fox more than just another print—it became a symbol of Wren’s early creative spirit.
While the bicycle design evolved before eventually being retired, the Flying Fox continued to resonate with Wren’s community. It became a fan favourite, cherished for its timeless appeal, much like a well-loved pair of jeans that just fit perfectly. The design took on a life of its own, remaining a mainstay in our collection for over a decade.
Over the years, we created several print runs of the Flying Fox, producing hundreds of sheets that have sustained us for quite some time. However, as with all things, the time has come to make space for something new. Saying goodbye to such a beloved design is bittersweet, but we’re excited about the future.
The Flying Fox will always hold a special place in Wren’s history. It represents not just a product but a journey filled with creativity, collaboration, and a deep connection to our customers. As we bid farewell to this iconic print, we’re filled with gratitude for the love and support it has received over the years.
Here’s to the Flying Fox, and to the new adventures ahead!
