Kamersvol Geskenke

FlowersToday I went to fetch my goodies from the Kamersvol Geskenke (which is Afrikaans for ‘rooms full of gifts’) market. It was such a beautiful venue with even more beautiful items for sale.

Quietly in the morning I went as a visitor on Saturday morning with some friends and family – it was quiet in the morning (before the start when I was restocking my hat stands with bags), but by 10am there was hardly any space to move.

Kamersvol Collage

Look at all these marvelous handmade products. The variety was wonderful; from traditional veldskoene to paper place settings and ceramic eggholders,  it was like walking through a magazine shoot. To see more pictures visit my Kamersvol flickr set.

This week is the Kamersvol Geskenke market (Wednesday to Sunday). This gorgeous photograph was taken for the November Issue of House & Leisure (turn to page 31) and featured some of the products that will be at Kamersvol and as you can see, Wren will be there. If last year was anything to go on then it is definitely worth gathering your friends and heading out to the DeMorgenzon farm this weekend (or if you can, before).

Linen grain Sacks

It is always nerve racking bringing out a new product becuase you never know how it will do. I was especially nervous for the Antique Linen & Leather Bags becuase they are the most expensive item I have ever made but my nervousness was quickly forgotten as the bags flew out of my studio space. On Saturday I had the bags at the Biscuit Mill for the first time (check the dates) and even though I only have a few left, the response far exceeded my expectations. I barely had to explain their story – customers loved them and simply had to have one. I have just ordered more antique linen grain sacks and I cannot wait for them to arrive. They are going to make beautiful bags.

Flower stand

Today I had a girls day with my granny and mom. We went to the CY market and browsed through all the lovely stuff there followed by a sun filled and wind-free lunch (for those who have headaches from the summer South Easterly winds that have arrived in a gale overnight you will understand why I am mentioning this).

Market Collage

The market is fairly small but each room is full of wonderful goodies from decorative wall hangings to clothing and wonderful deli delights.

Cupcake Pin cushions

My mom found this cute pun-cushion cupcake which is significant becuase in my mom’s class, way-back-when she was my teacher in sub B/Grade 2, we all knitted these long ’snakes’ and made tea cosies.

The market is on till Sunday 2pm. There is also a wine festival on in Durbanville this weekend which is another reason to go and spend a day there. To see more details click here.

*NEW**The Ashleigh Bag*

It has been months since I introduced a new product. Some designs are quick to develop and others take longer. This one has taken months to perfect but I think that is what it now is: perfect.

My favourite thing about this new style called the Ashleigh bag, is it’s versatility. It really is whatever you want and need it to be. For example:

It can be worn as a SLING bag which I call the bucket style as it hangs in a very fashionably relaxed manner.

Or it can be worn as a SHOULDER bag creating a strong triangular silhouette with two cute capped corners.

…and it is also the perfect CARRY bag for your side.

ash-5-a.jpg

The bag is versatile by it’s two detachable straps that clip into eyelets. There are six eyelets (two on the front, two on the back and two on the sides). By choosing where to clip your strap, you choose the style you want.

This bag is also unlike any of my other bags becuase it closes securely with full length zip.

Inside it is lined in a contrasting or complimentary colour with two small pockets perfect for your cell ph and wallet.

On the oustide there is a BIG (hidden) pocket for all the quick reach items to be kept in. This closes with hidden magnet.

Overall the Ashleigh bag is spacious and well styled. It is bigger than the small town bag, a little bit smaller than the Big Town bag and quite a bit smaller than the Organic Coffee bags. It really comes down to how you wear it – I wear mine with a smile. :)

Christmas Night Market

See you there….

biscuit-mill-xmas-marketThis will be my FIRST night market at the Biscuit Mill. Last year I went as a shopper and had a really good time – good food, good people and good fun. However this year it will be a little different as I will enjoying the festivities with my bags, standing behind.

Click to find out where, what and who (last year’s pics from skinny’s blog).

Xmas Market in Muiz

There will be 12 designers with a wide array of fabulous creations and if that is not enough reason, then there is free champagne and delicious sushi for sale.

I look forward to seeing you there on Saturday (13th Dec). (P.S. I’ll be there all day soaking up the nice warm sun relaxing under a big tree).

Kamersvol Geskenke

I visited the Kamersvol Geskenke market this morning with my mom. We wondered around oohing and aahing at beautiful things, buying presents and then sharing lunch on the grass in the sunshine.

I took some my happy snaps to share with you:

Here are some of my favourite finds:

Skinny and Jezze had their beautiful wares popping up in different places. (Pic Below)

I loved this packaging (below) – soft tin sewn together with wire and lined with loose tissue paper to package bath soaps.

Aren’t these brooches and medallions gorgeous (below). If they were not material I would have wanted to eat them they are in such yummy colours.

market-5.jpg

Isn’t this a lovely flower display … (below). Aloes and other plants alike in old food tins and other odd pots such as chamber pots.

It was so much fun wondering through corridors and discovering the different areas of the market. To see more pic’s visit Jesse’s blog.

The even is definitely worth visiting. It is open for five days but I would advice that you go before the weekend if you can becuase it was already jam packed when I was there this morning.

On Saturday Wren had a stall at the designergoods market in Salt River and it went very well.

It is a completely different experience selling off-line. I was extremely (and unjustifiably) nervous but after I sold my first bag I relaxed and had a lot of fun. I met some great people and saw some fantastic things (I could have spent all my money there in two ticks). Instead, I made my Christmas list. It was all so new and wonderful to me that I completely forgot to take photo’s – I’m sorry. I promise that next time (Sat 18th Oct) I will take some pictures.

Description of my stand: I had two wooden hatstands full of bags, wooden crates stained with old oak that Jeremy’s dad had organized for me with glass tops and a small mat. It was very simple but it worked well.

However, there are a few things I learnt that I will apply at my next Saturday market:

  1. My products need more information on them. I am so used to etsy where there is a product description, profile page, policy page etc etc for buyers to read to learn more. At the market the buyers had no way of finding this out. They did not know my bags are made using the ends of fabric rolls, or that each one is unique, or that the coffee bags are organic. Next time, better labelling.
  2. I need a stool. I thought: “agh, don’t worry, I will just stand.” I am regretting that becuase I am still nursing my swollen knees.
  3. Have a space for packaging. It was very unprofessional wrapping the bags on the floor.
  4. Bring extra price tags, string, tape and some clothes pegs. I did not and when I discovered the bird pouches had no price tag, I had to improvise. I also wanted to hang the bird pouches on a string between the hatstands. I could not do this so the bird pouches had to lie down.
  5. I should add the store name somewhere, discreetly. The only ‘Wren’ promotion was on the labels. I need more.

These are simple things I forgot, but non-the-less, it was a very successful and I am looking forward to next Saturday.
